Construction sites are inherently dangerous places, and anyone working on a construction site faces a number of risks on a daily basis.

However, this does not mean that if you are injured while working on a construction site, it is simply something you must accept. The law states that your health and safety should be protected while you are at work – just like any other employee, worker or contractor in Northern Ireland.

So if you have been injured while working on a construction site, you need to consider whether the company you were working for acted negligently. If so, you could have grounds for a personal injury compensation claim. Contact us now to find out more.

Construction Site Accidents and Injuries

Due to the nature of a construction site, there are various ways in which a construction site worker might suffer an accident and injury. Common examples of Work Accidents on Construction Sites include –

  • Falling from a height
  • Head injuries from falling objects
  • Accidents involving machinery
  • Injuries arising from a lack of protective equipment or training
  • Injuries arising from poorly maintained machinery or equipment
  • Slips and trips
  • Exposure to toxic substances
  • Poor working practice

This is by no means a comprehensive list and there are various other ways in which someone working on a construction site might come to harm.

Often the injuries sustained are serious, and sadly in certain circumstances, they will be fatal. In fact, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) reported three construction site fatalities in 2016/17, and two the previous year.

Construction Site Claims

Construction site accidents are of course devastating for all concerned, and when an incident arises, it is natural to wonder whether anything could have been done to prevent it from happening. Unfortunately, the answer is often – yes.

This is because all employees and contractors working on a construction site (as well as any visitors) should be kept safe from harm, so far as is reasonably practicable. This responsibility falls to the employer.

In practical terms, this means that an employer must take steps to protect your health and safety while you are on site. This might include providing the correct training and protective equipment, implementing the correct health and safety regulations, supervising workers and servicing machinery, to name but a few.

If someone does sustain an injury on a construction site, it stands to reason that the employer has failed in their duty to provide a safe working environment. If so, the injured person will be legally entitled to pursue a personal injury claim for compensation. If the accident resulted in a fatality, the family of the deceased will be able to make a claim instead.

Compensation For Work Accidents on Construction Sites

Because construction site accidents often result in severe injuries, the compensation awarded in such cases can be high. This is particularly true if the injured person cannot return to work because of their injuries, meaning there will be a large loss of earnings claim.
